Jhunjhunwala, the son of an income tax officer, began dabbling in stocks while still in college. He started investing with $100 in 1985, when the Bombay Stock Exchange Index was 150; it currently trades at more than 60,000.

Rakesh married Rekha Jhunjhunwala on Sunday, February 22, 1987. The couple experienced a difficult pregnancy. After six cycles of IVF, his wife gave birth to their daughter Nishtha on June 30, 2004. Aryaman and Aryaveer, his twin boys, were born on March 2, 2009.
